The Science

It's not just the news and celebrity reviews that back up the benefits of cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing). The scientific principles behind cryolipo were discovered by Dermatologists Dieter Manstein, MD, PhD and R. Rox Anderson, MD, of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Following on from research conducted over 40 years ago.


The physicians and their team conducted research that demonstrated that under carefully controlled conditions, subcutaneous fat cells are naturally more vulnerable to the effects of cold than other surrounding tissue. Their initial work, published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine in November 2008, showed that:

  • Exposure to cooling via energy extraction causes fat cell apoptosis - a natural, controlled cell death, which leads to the release of cytokines and other inflammatory mediators that gradually eliminate the affected cells.

  • Inflammatory cells gradually digest the affected fat cells in the months after the procedure, reducing the thickness of the fat layer.

  • Lipids from the fat cells are slowly released and transported by the lymphatic system to be processed and eliminated, much like that of fat from food.

  • Based on their research, the investigators concluded "prolonged, controlled local tissue cooling can induce selective fat cell reduction and subsequent loss of subcutaneous fat, without damaging the overlying skin." This discovery, called "selective Cryolipolysis," led to the development of cryolipolysis / cryolipo, also known as fat freezing.

The cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing) machine we use is based on this principle using advanced technology. The results have been medically proven by many trails and measuring the fat layer via ultrasound after cryolipolysis to validate results. There are many clinical trials and reviews in scientific journals that verify the results and we have had some amazing results with up to 45% fat reduction in the treated area on many clients.

How does the cryolipo treatment work?

The process is relatively simple. You identify a fat area you would like to reduce, we measure the fat area to ensure that we apply the right temperature and length of treatment, mark the area and decide which size cryolipo head to use.

We then put on a special anti freeze membrane and the machine heats and then rapidly cools the area for between 40 and 60 minutes.

At the end of the cryolipo the area will be red and numb and possibly with some localised bruising. This is only temporary and you can go back to work / start physical activity again straight away.

Fat is then reduced over 3-12 weeks. The frozen fat dies and is removed from your body naturally. Some clients have reported good results within 1 week but the best results are seen after circa 3-12 weeks. See our FAQs page for more in dept details on the actual process.
